Fandom: Mass Effect

Pairing: f!Shepard/Thane

Summary: "Morning" is a subjective term on the Citadel. Still, when the sun is up, Shepard is up, and determined to make something for breakfast.

Length: 5.2k

Excerpt:

The sound of footsteps put her on edge all over again, and she had to take a quick breath and remind herself it was not an ambush, just her sweetheart, just Thane, whom she had been apart from for far too long, but—but it wasn’t.

Shepard blinked stupidly, wondering how she could possibly be both so paranoid, and yet unobservant.

                “Kolyat?”

Happy February 4th! For Femslash February, a nice collection of femslash fanfic recs! Asteriks by personal favs (★‿★)

* after the flood, all the colors came out by madamebadger - f!Shepard/Tali - Tali has nursed a crush on Shepard for years, but there was never any indication--any at all--that anything could come of it. And she has plenty on her plate with the rebuilding of Rannoch. But the truth is that the heart is not so easy to quiet. Especially when Shepard comes back to visit.

Almost Like Being in Love by Urdnot_wrekt - f!Shepard/Liara - As with any new relationship, Shepard and Liara can't seem to keep their hands to themselves.

Between Us by @anneapocalypse - f!Shepard/Tali - While the war rages all around them, what was between Tali and Shepard remains.

* building mountains in your memory by @chocochipbiscuit - f!Shepard/Liara - Liara spends two years mourning Shepard's death before Cerberus brings her back.

Cardamom and Cloves by wolframbeta - f!Shepard/Liara - Liara takes the night off from her duties as an information broker on Illium to share a meal and quiet conversation. It doesn't go according to plan.

Expiation by supernovasooth - Jack/Miranda - Miranda tries to apologize in her own way.

Faithfully Faithless by Settiai - Ashley/Liara - War and faith didn't exactly go hand-in-hand

For the Living by DrJekyl - f!Shepard/Samara - Samara's relationship with death has always been complex; her relationship with life and love even more so.

Grasping at Straws by Settiai - f!Shepard/Ashley - Ashley kept getting the feeling that she was missing something.

The Great Cabin Conspiracy of '73 by DrJekyl - Aethyta/Benezia - Two matriarchs somehow get stuck in a chilly cabin with no security escort and no extranet access.

Kiss and Get It Over With by ziskandra - Jack/Miranda - Faced with the end of the universe, old differences are set aside.

Motion by SomethingProfound - f!Shepard/Traynor - Sam Traynor's life would be a lot easier if Marines could keep their shirts on. Or: a new friendship aboard the Normandy between the ship's comms specialist and her Executive Officer blooms into something else as the war rages.

nights, by the light of whatever would burn by madamebadger - f!Shepard/Tali/Garrus - In every life, you have to make trade-offs. Shepard has always been at peace with what she's given up to be who and what she is, mostly because she's focused her attention on everything but her own personal life. Even her dearest friends know that she will always, to some degree, hold them at arm's length. But the war has a way of burning everyone down to their most essential selves, and in the end even Shepard can't help seeing, finally, what she wants, what she needs--and what she may have lost.

Purple Shadows by Settiai -Ashley/Liara - Ashley hadn't even considered that the Shadow Broker would be the best person to help clear her name. She'd reacted on pure instinct. It probably said more than she'd like it to say, that her first thought when in trouble was that she needed to find Liara.

* Rakhana by DrJekyl - Aethyta/Benezia - The revelation that the hanar are conspiring to uplift a newly discovered species, the drell, sends shockwaves through the galaxy and right into the T’Soni household.

A Recommendation by YourLocalPriestess - f!Shepard/Ashley - Ashley and Shepard haven't spoken more than a few words to each other since Ilos, and more importantly, since their kiss beforehand. But it had been over a week, and a recommendation leaves Ash with room to doubt what they have.

* Silent days, violent shades by acrosspontneuf - f!Shepard/Aria - ‘There’s profit in survival,’ Aria says, later, an offer masked as a parting shot as Shepard starts to walk away. They both know that Shepard can’t run, but Shepard allows herself the illusion for another stolen moment. The thought of disappearing is tempting - she could discover other galaxies, let this one save itself for once. She could live without being so intrinsically aware of how close she is to the end of it all.

something more comfortable by xenosaurus - f!Shepard/Tali - The first thing Tali does after Rannoch is move all of her things into Shepard’s quarters.

* Stolen Goods by DrJekyl - Aethyta/Benezia/Shiala - Benezia returns home early from a work trip and finds that Aethyta and Liara are up to minor mischief, with Shiala as their willing accomplice.

An Unexpected Pleasure by BlackJackKent - f!Shepard/Traynor - Shore leave is a time for cutting loose from the day-to-day protocols of military life, and after a few drinks at Purgatory, Sam Traynor finds the courage and motivation to try flirting again with Commander Shepard. She's fairly sure Shepard is interested in women too, and her intuition doesn't lie -- the only trouble is Shepard hasn't quite realized it herself yet.

Worth It by Pigeon_theoneandonly - f!Shepard/Traynor - In the midst of the reaper war, Shepard finds a pocket of normalcy for Sam.

When Thane came to, Shepard was scrutinizing the wall in front of the sofa, onto which she had projected a number of color swatches from her omnitool. It was another moment with her that made him double-take as he tried to discern her line of thinking. His effort was not assisted by the sight of her bare shoulders in a tank top, and the muscles that rippled beneath her soft, dark skin as she flicked color palettes here and there.

I'm having some Shrios feelings so I'm sharing this ficlet from tumblr (AO3).

***

When Shepard arrived at Huerta Memorial, Thane was asleep in his room. The thought of waking him didn’t even occur to her: she spent so many of her own waking hours aching for the embrace of sleep, and she knew how he got by snatching odd handfuls of hours here and there around Kepral’s keeping him too ill to truly rest.

Instead, she just observed him for a moment: the slight part of his full lips, through which he drew his wet, ragged breaths; the curl of his fingers beside his face; the way the sunlight glinted off his scales (duller now, than when they had first met; Shepard was no expert in what a healthy drell looked like, but she was sure Thane wasn’t it).

The twisting, pulling, stinging feeling that knotted up her chest was something she pushed to the back of her mind every day. The commander in charge of forming the galaxy’s response to the reapers did not have time to be mourning her dying lover; she didn’t have the right, when so many were depending on her.

But here, with Thane asleep and no one else to see, she didn’t have to pretend she was handling it. Moving as gently as she could (which was, to tell the truth, not much), Shepard eased down onto the bed beside Thane, thinking to just close her eyes a moment; just for a minute, imagine there was nothing outside the bed, with the two of them in it.

 - - -

When Thane’s sleep lightened, he was immediately aware that he was not alone, and that catapulted him into complete wakefulness. This ability to be alert so soon out of sleep had proved useful in the past, but in this case, unnecessary: he recognized the scarred brown hand on the bed.

Shepard.

Satisfied his life was not in prompt peril, Thane took stock of the situation: Shepard was pressed against his back, one arm thrown over him, curled against his chest, and from the sound of her breathing, she was as asleep as he had been moments earlier.

As always, her embrace was wonderfully warm to a cool-blooded drell, and he suspected she was as sparse on sleep as ever. Loathe as either of them were to spend their precious few hours together unconscious, he couldn’t bring himself to wake her. Shepard drove herself like a woman possessed; if there was ever an end to the war, he was certain she’d simply collapse, and sleep for several weeks straight. Gods knew she’d earned it.

When he began to move, thinking to give her the bed to herself so she might sleep better, longer, she shifted: the arm tightened around him, and he felt her press her face into the back of his neck, her nose against the ridge arcing down from his cheek. He stopped moving.

Instead, he gave her hand a little squeeze, and, possibly drifting through near-consciousness, Shepard’s fingers twitched around his. They had both implicitly discussed how terrible it would be to waste what little time they had, but with Shepard wrapped around him like a deep-sea kraken, he had to think this memory would comfort him well into the ocean’s embrace, even if Shepard were not awake to hear him say so. He would let her sleep–there was no time wasted in enjoying the feel of her arms around him.

From this ship ask meme on tumblr

Yesss good Bioware ships okay.

Zevwarden (I'll be using my canon Zev romance, Sereda Aeducan, for this)

falls asleep on the couch

Sereda. Zevran's not big on naps, and if he plans on sleeping, he wants to do it somewhere comfortable. Also, if he's going down for a nap, he'll probably try to take Sereda with him.

makes friends with the neighbors

Zevran! Sereda is pretty blunt and the "mind your own business" type, so she doesn't bother the neighbors with her shit, and she doesn't care to be bothered with theirs. Zevran, however, is, as we all know, chatty and personable, and he sees a benefit to being on good terms with their neighbors.

Also, in any post-canon/AU where they have neighbors, I feel like Zevran would be so delighted to have something as normal as regular neighbors living around his normal regular-people house that he would go out of his way to be friendly with them because he's just so pleased to be living his best life.

is the adventurous eater

Zevran. Sereda doesn't really care for a lot of food on the surface, so she's found a few human dishes she's okay with and mainly sticks to those. Zevran, being Antivan, is used to very different cuisine, so he's had to be adaptable to eat in Ferelden. Good thing he's also more willing to try new things, even when it ends badly!

hogs the covers at night

Zevran. He gets cold more easily so he's a lot more likely to bundle up in the covers and leave Sereda trying to jerk them back over to his side. Fortunately for her, she's stronger, so if she gets ahold of them she can usually keep them XD

forgets to do the dishes

Sereda. As princess of Orzammar, she never had to do her own dishes. On the road, she and Alistair and the rest bounced chores around, but if she were settling back into a more "normal" life I can easily see the dishes slipping her mind again.

tries to surprise their partner more often

Zevran is definitely the more spontaneous one. He likes taking Sereda out unexpectedly, or bringing flowers, or making something nice for dinner. Sereda is not really one for doing unexpected things, and she's also not super creative in the "romantic spontaneity" department so she usually leaves this sort of thing to Zev.

leaves dirty laundry on the floor

Zevran. He's not bothered by this at all and is perfectly comfortable throwing his clothes around when he takes them off. Sereda usually leaves them for him to collect later, and is not overly sympathetic when he later can't find things as they're getting ready (she is, however, generally entertained).

stays up til 2 AM reading

Sereda. She reads more of the two of them in general and Zevran is less inclined to let hobbies get in the way of his proper rest.

sings in the shower

Zevran, for sure. Sereda's not much of a singer. Zevran is most likely to do it if he's trying to bug Sereda, or if he's just in a very good mood, which isn't uncommon.

takes the selfies

Zevran. Sereda will pose with him if he asks, but Zevran is usually the one to bust out the camera.

plans date night

Zevran, again. He's the more romantic one of the two of them. Sereda is more practical and views Zevran very much as a partner, while Zevran definitely leans into the romance and would be the one to plan special nights for the two of them that don't involve killing Darkspawn or digging up old Warden treaties or politically sparring with heads of state.

Shrios (with my canon Thane romance, Amondi Shepard)

falls asleep on the couch

Both of them, but Thane probably more often :( As his illness progresses, he tires out very easily, so he often takes naps during the day.

makes friends with the neighbors

Neither of them is very neighborly tbh Shepard is busy and she's not really the gregarious social type, and Thane is intensely private. However, in the interest of not standing out too much, Thane might occasionally have a conversation in passing with a neighbor, where Shepard probably will avoid it.

is the adventurous eater

They're both pretty practical, so I think it's less that they're adventurous and more that they'll eat what's in front of them because they need to eat to function and do their jobs.

hogs the covers at night

Thane. His blood runs a lot colder than Shepard's, so he will unconsciously cocoon himself in their blankets, even though he's warmer when he's under them with Shepard. He also clings to her, asleep and awake, because she's warm

forgets to do the dishes

Shepard, but it's not so much that she forgets as that she trusts Thane to take care of it. When Shepard does get to visit him on the Citadel (otherwise they'd be eating in the mess on the Normandy), it's usually very brief, so chores go by the wayside a bit and it's also the only chance she has to rest from work. Thane enjoys being able to relieve her of chores for a few days--it makes him feel like he's helping--so he doesn't mind doing it.

tries to surprise their partner more often

Neither of them really do this, I think. They don't have a lot of time for romance, so the most surprising they get is Shepard dropping by Thane's place unannounced because she happened to be on the Citadel, and that's enough for them. Since they have limited time, with Thane's illness, they don't really need to make things exciting--they're happy just to get to have time together.

leaves dirty laundry on the floor

Neither, again. Thane is fairly fastidious in his living space, and Shepard's gotten used to keeping things ship-shape after a lifetime career in the navy. She also doesn't really have enough clothes to be leaving things on the floor--if it's not dirty she's wearing it. If she leaves things on the floor, it's to pick up and put back on not much later.

stays up til 2 AM reading

Shepard. Girl's a classic workaholic and the more problems pile up for her and the Milky Way, the less sleep she gets. Often it's work, but other times it's stress and insomnia keeping her up. She'll call Thane and because of the time difference--or occasionally because his Kepral's is keeping him up--she manages to catch him, and they'll talk for a few hours. But even if she can't get him, she'll find something else to keep her hands or her mind busy with, because she just can't sit still.

sings in the shower

Neither. Shepard doesn't sing. Thane doesn't shower. However, he might hum a little bit to himself while oiling his scales. Shepard likes listening to this, but she's never said anything to him about it.

takes the selfies

Neither of them is big on it, but Thane would probably do it more often. Drell don't put a ton of weight on mementos, given their natural eidedic memories, but he is very aware that Shepard could conceivably live the other 50% of her life after his death (healthy humans average 150 years; healthy drell average 85 years), and knowing that human memories aren't great, and get worse with age, he worries sometimes, in short, that she'll forget him. So I think he probably really tries to leave her things to remember him by--photos, voice recordings, letters, etc. So the selfies--and he'll usually try to get Kolyat or Shepard or one of their friends in it too--are not really for him, but for him to leave behind for Shepard after he dies.

plans date night

Again, they don't really have a ton of time for this. It's probably reasonably even--Shepard wants to make sure they have some plans before she gets into port, but she also wants, generally, to do what Thane wants to do, being as his time is limited. So she'll usually toss out an idea ("Let's go to dinner"/"Let's see a movie") and then let Thane pick the details (The restaurant they go to, the movie they're seeing, etc.). Sometimes Thane will have an idea of what he wants to do with her when she gets in, and they'll do that, but generally they're very low-key about their relationship.

Cross-posted.

This is a small exchange in a much larger conversation about Thane’s career as an assassin, but it sticks out to me as something revealing of Thane’s character.

Thane is such a level-headed, soft-spoken, even-tempered character it’s easy to write him off as someone who just doesn’t feel much, either because of his alien-ness (which is wrong, as we see quite a bit of emotion from Kolyat, telling us this is not a drell quirk, but is particular to Thane), or just as a quirk of personality. But that’s not true–Thane feels very deeply. There’s a reason he had to sink into “battle-sleep” to work as an assassin, why he felt deeply enough for Irikah to abandon his Compact with the hanar, why her death drove him into such intense rage and despair, and why his love for Shepard (if romanced), was enough to shake him out of his complacency and make him fear for his life again.

Thane may have good control over his feelings, but they are there.

So yes, he is prideful about his talent. Not that he takes pleasure in killing, but he is the best–quick, quiet, doesn’t let his victims suffer. And he takes pride in that. Enough that he felt threatened by Shepard possibly reaching his target first (as, at this point, he did not know Shepard was after him). Thane is prideful, and emotional, and he does have a sense of humor (albeit very dry)–he is someone who has had to learn to control these things, who by necessity (he’s been training and working as an assassin since he was six years old) has become deeply reserved and private, but there is just one of many hints in the game that Thane is an intensely emotional person with a lot more depth than a player would pick up on with only superficial interaction with his character.
