There seems to be an assumption among parts of the fandom that Turgon neglected or wasn’t interested in Maeglin and that always baffles me? First, I think Silm makes it very clear that Turgon loved his sister Aredhel and was devastated by her death--if anyone would understand Maeglin’s grief at her loss it would be Turgon--and so the assumption that he would discard or ignore her only child doesn’t make immediate sense.

But second, Maeglin is in a respected position as an adult! He sits on Turgon’s council and Turgon listens to him, even when Maeglin’s advice is calculated to bring about the end of Gondolin through its destruction by Melkor. This suggests that they did not have a cold or indifferent relationship and that it’s more likely Turgon took on or attempted to take a mentoring role with Maeglin, and that he trusted Maeglin and his opinion enough to follow his suggestions (again--even when Maeglin had deeply sinister motives).

“But Maeglin prospered and grew great among the Gondolindrim, praised by all, and high in the favor of Turgon...And he gathered about him all such as had the most bend to smithcraft and mining...” (“Of Maeglin”, The Silmarillion) (emphasis added)

Here we see that not only is Maeglin respected and appreciated (and I would anticipate, loved) by Turgon, but that he’s in fact rather popular in Gondolin. He may have had a rough start, but he clearly rights himself (up until the whole betraying them to Melkor thing) and establishes a solid reputation and a good life for himself there (setting aside his unrequited desire for Idril). He even had his own little group of smiths and miners who worked with and followed his teachings.

“Thus all seemed well with the fortunes of Maeglin, who had risen to be mighty among the princes of the Noldor, and greatest save one in the most renowned of their realms.” (“Of Maeglin”, The Silmarillion)

Near the end of the chapter is this, noting Maeglin (at this point in the story) among the great princes of the Noldor, which also suggests he was not considered an outsider, either among the Gondolindrim or in the family of Finwe.

My first fic for The Silmarillion! ヾ(•ω•`)o
rocky41_7: (Tolkien)
I finished The Silmarillion today and I feel exhausted I think that may be the saddest book I've ever read but also I'm definitely gonna read it again. It was a delicious agony; it hurt so bad because you root so hard for the characters only to watch them fuck up or fall victim to sheer bad luck. Nevertheless, there is so much potential for exploration there (especially where the female characters are concerned) and I find myself particularly fascinated with Nerdanel and Anaire and their decisions to stay in Valinor.

Anyway, apparently today is Fanfiction Writer Appreciation Day, so in honor of that I thought I’d share some recommendations from my recent reading which is...basically all Thorinduil. So.

Be sure to check content warnings and tags on the original post and feel free to share if you have other recommendations!

20th Century Boy by ScarletTyler - 7.9k - M - Thorin knows better than to fall in love with a rock star. His stubbornness has never met its match, that is until a certain three-meter tall, bottle-blond, bushy browed diva proves to him that there is always more than meets the eye.

A Prince by Any Other Name by TrekFaerie - 1.8k - E - Thranduil learns a very important lesson in the importance of accurate translation when interacting with foreign cultures.

Axe and Flame by Stewardess - 25k - M - After detecting a mysterious presence in his fortress, Thranduil moves Thorin to a more secure location: his bedroom. A blend of book canon (in which the dwarves are held for forty-two days) and movie canon.  Set in The Desolation Of Smaug film time period.

Blame Game by HeartofStanding - 459 - G - Thorin's going to blame something, but he's not sure what.

Dantalion by Angelas - 2.2k - E - In which Thranduil becomes distant and Thorin heeds whispers of Thranduil's rumored re-marriage. And torments himself with it.

Distractionby Valmouth - 10.6k - E - One hundred and ninety two is old enough now to know why he must stop the elf from touching him, and to understand the consequences of what he may do if he fails.

Ear to the Ground, Eye to the Sky by allthegoodnamesaretakendammit - 17k - E - He remembers. He remembers waking up this fateful morning, the way the sun had slanted through the window and struck the cut glass mirror, throwing scattered glory across the stone ceiling in fractals of rainbow color. He remembers thinking what a good omen it must be, to have gemstones transposed above his bed, for his eyes alone.

Today, Thorin stares at the light dancing above him and is paralyzed by mounting horror. He knows that he is not in the halls of his ancestors because he feels no sense of peace.

The Fragility of Winter by meshkol - 12.5k - T - His mind is torn between so many things: old love and the possibility of a new one; the guilt of betrayal that may or may not be warranted; staying in his familiar, though lonely life without the terror of change and uprooting everything he is comfortable with for something that is daring and exciting and has a huge chance of failure.

Gift Giving by Smidget25 - 2.5k - T - In which Thorin tries to give the Elvenking a present and it all goes dreadfully wrong.

The Heart is Bold That Looks on Gold by Liu - 6.9k - M - Thorin could not expect what was to come when one Elven King came to visit Erebor...

History Lesson by Stewardess - 3.2k - T - A Thorin and Thranduil first meeting story. At Girion of Dale's coronation, Thorin's grandfather Thror is determined to prove dwarves are the equal of elves. Takes place a few years before the "gem snub" scene shown in flashback in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey extended edition.

Mourning the Fallen by umi_no_arawashi - 759 - T - The battle has been fought, and now it is time to count the dead.

Naught but Ice and Silver by HaruIchigo - 1.5k - T- Not every jewel can be found under the ground.

Ownershipby Randy Thrandy - 4.6k - E - Thorin hated to covet his father's lover, but Thranduil is the temptress of his youth and enables his unhealthy obsession.

Scarsby Valmouth - 3k - T - The Dragon, Thranduil thinks, would have done better to keep Thorin son of Thrain with the rest of his treasure hoard.

Tease Me, Please Me by uprightpiano - 1.2k - M -  Thorin drops in on one of his clubs for a routine visit and spends some time with the club's favourite employee.

Warning: Sex on Legs in the Kitchen by uprightpiano - 500 - G - Thorin wakes up one night (out of many such nights) to a party in his kitchen. Starring Thranduil as the Party King, the many Elves as The Partygoers, and Thorin as That Guy.

Vertigo by heartofstanding - 2.8k - T - Thorin gets stuck up a tree, Thranduil rescues him and has a revelation.

Plus one bonus Tauriel/Thranduil that I couldn’t fit anywhere else:

Copper and Starlight by ourdailymask - 2.6k - G - The Age of Elves is ending and the last of the Mirkwood elves arrive at the Grey Havens. Some partings are more difficult than expected.

Normally I'm not at all into modern Tolkien AUs but I was thinking the other day about a modern AU where Thorin is an aspiring folk musician (or at least somebody who enjoys it as a hobby) and he moonlights at clubs and such to perform under the pseudonym "Oakenshield." He develops a biting repartee/reluctant romantic interest in Thranduil, who frequents the clubs and during one of their back-and-forths challenges Thranduil to come up and perform something. Thranduil takes the bait ofc because as it happens he's a musician as well, and Thorin expected something classical or folksy but it turns out that what Thranduil is really good at is hard rock and Thorin needs like a month to recover from that.

Jokes because Thranduil actually loves doing classical and Elven folk music, he just wanted to fuck with Thorin and it was totally worth it for the look on Thorin's face when he let out the first good hard-rock scream.

Then I started getting actually attached to this AU... with Thranduil using music as a channel for his grief over his wife, and the pain of raising his child alone and Legolas never knowing his mother, ("Bones" definitely went in there for this reason--"I can't exist without you/I can't do this without you/I'm dying here without you/I want to lie with your bones forever"), and bonding with Thorin over a sense of loss, also lmao if Legolas is still a minor and Thorin has to like, meet and interact with Thranduil's kid/teen. It's been at least ten years since Niwei died so he's "healed" but also it's v clear he never really got over it (hence his frequency at the bars) and Thorin can maybe help with that.

If/when they do get involved, Thorin so absolutely writes songs about Thranduil and he never says that's what it is but Thranduil can hear like, a single verse and know. That's about him. He's very smug about it. Sometimes Thorin goes back and changes the lyrics just to spite him.

Edit: Also, possibly Thranduil was reasonably well-known, especially locally, back in the day, and while he did release a few more songs after Niwei's death (virtually all of which centered on that loss), the stress of grief and caring for an infant prevented him from pursuing the career further. However, Thorin is able to look him up and find Thranduil's old music.

Excerpt:

"Identifying cracks in the base of the large statutes characteristic of the dwarven kingdoms was no easy task. A hairline fracture in the center of such a hulking mass of stone—often supportive as well as decorative—was frequently undetectable. Too often, the only way such damage was found was when the stone began to crumble—or in the worst cases, collapsed entirely. Over time, the Dwarves learned those things that might proceed such damage—earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, other forces of nature. But even then, they could only survey carefully and monitor for signs—actually finding the crack before further damage resulted remained a prohibitively difficult job.

Thror had ruled Erebor since before Thorin was born. A proud son of Durin, unyielding and indefatigable, he inspired creativity in his smiths and loyalty from his soldiers, and Erebor prospered, her halls pouring forth more gems under the Dwarves’ skilled hands than they knew what to do with. He was a pillar of Dwarven society, the rock upon which Erebor rested, and thus supported, it was impossible for them to fall.

But Thorin began to fear they had overlooked a crack."

rocky41_7: (tolkien)
Fandom: The Hobbit
Pairing: Thranduil/Thorin
Summary: Elves really do sleep like the dead, and Thranduil probably should have warned Thorin about that ahead of time.
rocky41_7: (Tolkien)

Saw this post this morning about Elves and sleep and I was just thinking...

Thranduil comes by Erebor for diplomatic reasons. Ofc. He and Thorin get up to shenanigans, because, you know, it happens. And maybe because he's been under a lot of stress lately or is feeling unusually relaxed or whatever but Thranduil kind of unintentionally falls asleep afterwards. Which is fine, whatever. Thorin wakes up in the morning and Thranduil is still out cold. Now he knows Thranduil basically never sleeps, so this is already a bit odd, but maybe he had too much to drink the night before. So Thorin lets it go and starts getting ready for the day.

But by the time breakfast rolls around Thranduil is still not up, and Thorin is starting to get questions from the Dwarves, and the Elves are murmuring among themselves about where the king has gotten to. So Thorin decides that naptime is over (and although he knows Elves don't get sick he's sort of starting to wonder if something is seriously wrong with Thranduil). He goes back to his room to wake Thranduil up but nothing works. This elf is out. We're talking shaking, yelling, slapping, throwing water in his face--nothing. Even tries rolling him off the bed (it takes him the better part of twenty minutes to get him back in, which he only bothered with for appearances in case anyone else should see this). Only the fact that Thorin can tell he's still breathing keeps him from completely panicking.

So now the dilemma--trying to get help from anyone else means admitting that Thranduil spent the night in Thorin's chambers. Which he really does not want to do. So he tries to just...play it off. After all, Thranduil has to get up sometime. But hours roll by into afternoon and the Elves are starting to get very concerned, and now they're starting to poke around parts of Erebor that Thorin has not given them permission to, and they're heartbeats away from accusing the Dwarves of having done something to their king.

Finally then, Thorin has to admit he knows exactly where Thranduil is, and admits something is wrong with him. He takes one of Thranduil's companions to his chambers (refusing, ofc, to answer any questions about this situation), and gravely presents the unconscious king, and this elf, to Thorin's surprise, relaxes all at once.

"Oh. He's asleep."

And three days later he gets up and they're on their way, leaving Thorin to explain to the Dwarves what exactly happened that night.
