I saw some other posts looking to spread fandom positivity so I thought I would do it also <3

1. Second Music of the Ainur. This fanart by navyinks is absolutely GORGEOUS. She now has my preferred Daeron design and the beauty and drama of this piece is just stunning. Fantastic work (along with her other stuff as well!)

2. Better a Holy Discord. Wonderful take on the Valar by clothono and such engaging prose! I've loved this author's work in the past (huge shout-out to The One With All the Birds, my favorite Elwing fic of all time!) and this one definitely does not disappoint.

3. Elwing's Worst Nightmare. Anattmar's works are always breathtaking and she captures so well the Doriathrin perspective on the Maedhros. This piece evokes such a visceral fear response, truly amazing work!

4. A King is He That Can Hold His Own. This fanfic by iddump is a response to a kink meme prompt and I am frankly astounded by what this author has managed to do with it. Maedhros/Thingol is not a ship that comes up much in this fandom, but this author makes it intensely compelling with plenty of hot sex too.

5. Thingol. I could honestly pick any of Noldorinpainter's Thingol artworks because they're all fabulous. And such a unique style!

6. Little Tenderness. Batshape is another author with generally excellent works, but I lose my shit over this Feanor/Nerdanel Formenos piece. It has all the love and angst and gender dynamics I could want out of Feanel and is one of the few fanfics I've re-read.

7. Fingolfin in Beleriand. This is my mental image of Fingolfin now and I will never change it.

Obsessively thinking about Feanor and Nerdanel in Mahtan’s smithy today and how much pre-courtship bs Mahtan must have put up with with those two...I think he was entertained by it.

He knew Feanor was into Nerdanel from so early on because while Feanor espouses not to care about anyone's opinion of him which is totally not true he was openly obsessed with what Nerdanel thought about him from like day 1

Mahtan: Okay now can you replicate the technique I just showed you?
Feanor: Yes yes but I have a question first
Mahtan: Yes?
Feanor: Is Nerdanel mad at me?

And yet when Mahtan gently posits to Nerdanel that it might just be a little bit possible that Feanor has a crush on her she’s like “wtf are you smoking dad why would you think that???”

rocky41_7: (Tolkien)

I’m obsessed it’s like

Nerdanel is the only person Feanor has ever felt understood by and

Nerdanel knows she can be her complete messiest ugliest worst self in front of Feanor and he will still love her and think well of her and

They are partners and creators and they are loud and unapologetic even when maybe they should be and

They created this whole family together out of love and joy and they raised seven children together and

Being with Nerdanel makes Feanor feel calm but also like he belongs and less like the entire world is against him and like he doesn’t have to tone himself down or be softer or gentler and

Being with Feanor makes Nerdanel feel like everything is possible and no obstacle is insurmountable and she always has someone at her back and with him she sees the world in totally new ways and

They walked hand-in-hand for maybe thousands of years and Feanor was the crown prince and Nerdanel was no great beauty and he could have chosen maybe anybody but he wanted her and he knew it so soon and

Nerdanel was the only person to ever make Feanor change his mind and hers was the only counsel he took and he must have respected her so much for that and

They had all of these beautiful wonderful things and Feanor broke them, he broke them all because Melkor took all his greatness and made him into a wrecking ball; he killed his mother and now his father and in his grief he will take all of the Noldor down with him; he implodes in on himself like a dying star and takes so many of the rest of them with him and

(It was the least surprising thing on earth when Nerdanel heard that Feanor had died in a burst of flame) and

He spends the next Age watching the ripples of his actions destroy everyone and everything he loved; watches his words turn his children into the worst monsters of Elvenkind; watches the splinters of the Noldor in Aman try to put the broken bits of their society back together; watches his brother desperately try to hold together the remnants of the family and knows it’s his fault it’s his fault he’s done this even if he never meant to and everyone else has to live with it and

Nerdanel is left behind in Tirion refusing to join on this plan and she can’t stop her children because they’re all adults and they want to go with dad and she watches Feanor collapsing on himself and destroying everything around him and she so desperately wants to pull him back but this time he won’t listen this time she can’t save him from himself and she can’t save anyone else from his ground zero she just sits in an empty house and listens to the echoes of that explosion for centuries and centuries after and thinks the Elf she loved is the same one who did all this and

Nerdanel wants to hate him she wants to so bad she smashes his things and screams at him in the house where she lives alone and melts her wedding ring and says she never should have married him but she also knows it wouldn’t hurt this much if she hadn’t loved him with her whole heart and then lost him to the worst of his demons and

Maybe someday those children come back and she can hold them and weep and try to patch their wounds together and despite everything each of them reminds her of him in their own way because these children she loves so much are both of them (and their own people too) and

If they ever saw each other again what can they say? What on earth can they say? Thousand and thousands of years after all this happened and they’ve both been watching the consequences of it fan out across the universe all this time, what do they say?

What do they say?

rocky41_7: (Tolkien)

I know Silm tells us essentially that Nerdanel was a moderating force on Feanor, but I refuse to believe she was the “holder of the brain cell” as the current fandom phrasing goes, or the Only Sane Man in the house. #1 because I don’t think someone like that would have married a person like Feanor in the first place; and #2 because it’s just boring as fuck imo

Silm also tells us that Nerdanel was basically the only one to ever change Feanor’s mind through counsel, and that they were “companions on many journeys” and that it was only his later deeds that “grieved her.” Which idk doesn’t sound to me like a description of someone who spent her whole time in this relationship demanding Feanor behave more responsibly and trying to reign in his passions. Feanor and Nerdanel’s relationship is, in my view, very much posited as a love story of equals. Other details we know are that a) Feanor married young (no comment on Nerdanel’s age iirc); and b) His choice in spouse was surprising to the rest of the Noldor. This has always suggested, to me, that Feanor fell very hard and very fast for Nerdanel, and that he was convinced she was The One, and that their relationship was formed on a deep understanding of each other as people. Feanor didn’t care that Nerdanel was “not the fairest of her people” or that as the crown prince of the Noldor, he could perhaps have cast a much wider net in a search for a spouse. Furthermore, because Elves don’t seem to marry for politics, Nerdanel had no serious motivation to agree unless she also wanted to get married.

Which brings me to my main point: Nerdanel saw Feanor’s slightly unhinged behavior and went “damn that’s pretty hot.” You will never convince me that Feanor’s burning passions aren’t exactly what attracted Nerdanel to him in the first place. Yes they make him hot-tempered and impulsive and occasionally (self-) destructive, but they also make him interesting. Feanor feels so much about everything and his deep need and desire to create and to understand and better the world around him was precisely what made Nerdanel take another look at him. She could get underneath the prickliness to the artist, the scholar, and she loved those things, and maybe she even loved how much he rejected anyone’s efforts to make him quiet down or behave differently, to make himself more likeable. They had seven kids together--which, iirc, is the most kids of any Elven couple in Arda--ever. Is that not supposed to be indicative of the passion these two held for each other?

And frankly, I would also buy she willingly took his side in most family feuds, even when she knew Feanor was being unreasonable, and furthermore, that she found a great deal of his disruptive behavior entertaining. Anaire and Earwen can try to convince her to push Feanor to apologize to Fingolfin for his latest Incident, but is she going to? Not unless Feanor’s done something really outrageous. Otherwise, she probably can’t even get through telling him “that was really unnecessary” without laughing. Nerdanel, apologize for Feanor’s behavior? Not likely!

Nerdanel acted as a moderating force on Feanor in that I think he was just calmer around her. He’s a very volatile person and we know that he never meshed well with his step-family and possibly felt out of place generally owing to Miriel’s fate, but I think with Nerdanel it felt like he had found a place. She understood him and they were partners and they were going to do this Life thing together. With Nerdanel, I think he began from a more relaxed, less reactive place, which had a corresponding impact on his behavior. And of course, because he felt Nerdanel understood him (and liked him), and he respected and loved her, he was willing to listen to her counsel (sometimes) when he would take no one else’s.

Lastly, the idea of Nerdanel spending hundreds or thousands of years as Feanor’s put-upon wife, trying to manage him and their seven children, essentially reduced to a Nagging Wife stereotype as she acts as the only restraint on him is just so boring and what an incredible, appalling waste of her character. Why don’t you just slap her down in a 1960s sitcom? I think Nerdanel deserves more than that. She had no reason to marry Feanor except that she wanted to, because she had spent a lot of time with him and she wanted him, she loved him, and she saw a future for them together, as partners.

“A surprise for me?” she asked herself aloud with a confused little laugh, finding herself rather funny.

Given her dedication to her craft, no one was much surprised, and it was expected that someday, Nerdanel would have a seat on the council herself. She was even attempting to take notes, though she wasn’t sure her judgement on what was worth noting for her father would match up with what Mahtan thought was necessary to know.

From this ship ask meme on tumblr

Oh, happy to tackle these two ο(=•ω<=)ρ⌒☆

falls asleep on the couch

Nerdanel. This is only because if Feanor is going to fall asleep somewhere he shouldn't, it will be his workbench. Both of them are devoted to their craft, so it's not unusual they wear themselves out, and Feanor especially is terrible about pushing himself well beyond the norm of sleep deprivation to work on something.

makes friends with the neighbors

Nerdanel, only because it definitely isn't Feanor. Feanor does not care to talk to their neighbors, he doesn't want to hear from their neighbors, he does not want to be disturbed by their neighbors. Fortunately, as they live in the royal palace, their only real neighbors are his family. Unfortunately, he does not get along with most of his family.

Nerdanel isn't especially gregarious either, but she can at least manage a surface level of politeness. But there are reasons she's not close with Anaire or Earwen.

is the adventurous eater

Feanor, because he'll basically eat whatever you put in front of him if he's looking to get back to something else. The only time he really whines about what he's eating is when he's being petulant. Nerdanel is not generally an adventurous eater; she has a few stock meals she makes and rarely ventures outside that because it's just easier to do it this way, and she's not a fan of cooking.

hogs the covers at night

I want to say Feanor, and also sakasakiii has a hilarious comic about this.

forgets to do the dishes

Feanor, although it's not so much that he "forgets" as that he has other things to do, and they have seven kids--there is definitely someone else whose time is less valuable who can do the dishes. But not Feanor. He's busy.

Needless to say when Nerdanel ends up doing several days' worth of dishes, she is less than pleased.

When Nerdanel goes off about the state of the kitchen, all seven boys will complain that no one told them they were supposed to do the dishes! Jeez amme, are they supposed to read minds?

tries to surprise their partner more often

Feanor. He makes stuff for Nerdanel all the time, so she's regularly getting gifts "just because" and even though a lot of it is jewelry and she doesn't wear a lot of jewelry, she keeps it all. Often, he inscribes something on what he gives her, so she hangs onto it for that.

He's also more spontaneous than her in general and more likely to pull her out of her workshop or some artisans' meeting as if there's something important going on, only to cajole her into going riding out past the city limits or going swimming or otherwise skipping out on their responsibilities.

After he left Aman, she didn't know what to do with it all, and ended up having several cupboards solely devoted to things Feanor had given her that she couldn't bear to sell, and some of it she destroyed when feeling particularly aggrieved.

leaves dirty laundry on the floor

Nerdanel. If she's worked especially late or is just worn out, she'll strip off her work clothes and leave them where they fell to go wash and change. Feanor regularly picks these things up for the laundry, but he doesn't mind doing it.

stays up til 2 AM reading

Feanor. He is the absolute worst about getting sucked into whatever he's doing and completely losing track of time. He has definitely worked straight through important events before (he should consider himself grateful Elves stop counting birthdays after they reach the age of majority, and don't celebrate annual memorials like wedding anniversaries). Fingolfin more than once has had to run down and pull Feanor out of the forge to be present at some event the crown prince is supposed to be present for (not that showing up covered in grease with his hair a mess is winning him big points with Finwe and Indis, nor is the failing to pay attention because he's still working through schematics in his head).

Nerdanel regularly has to go remind him to actually get some sleep.

sings in the shower

I don't think either of them is huge on it, but between the two of them, probably Nerdanel. Either of them is a lot more likely to do this if they have one of the babies with them, but I just don't see Feanor as a big singer, at least by Elf standards.

takes the selfies

Feanor. He's not obsessive about it, but he would definitely pose with his latest works in progress or creations to show them off. Once in a while he'll take one of him wearing jewelry he made, which is ostensibly the reason for the photo. Sometimes the kids pose with him.

Nerdanel might take pics of her works too, but the most you're likely to get of her is her reflection in a window or a hand or foot as she tries to get a good angle on the sculpture. She does show up in the selfies of other Finweans.

plans date night

Feanor. Nerdanel definitely does not go in for date planning. She is super casual about dating, so she was always kind of blown away by the stuff Feanor would plan for them, and this had a role in his winning her over. He definitely puts together some pretty extensive date night activities and he feels pretty good about himself when he manages to impress Nerdanel so he has incentive to keep it up.

rocky41_7: (tolkien)

I’m emotional again about how much Feanor and Nerdanel wanted a family. Elves conceive by choice only; there were no accidental pregnancies (although it is unclear whether the twins were a surprise or not...). Elves are immortal, so they had every reason to think Finwe would rule the Noldor forever, and even if that were not the case, they had the line of succession secure in Maedhros, and backed up in Maglor (the heir and the spare) so they had no reason to keep having children except that they wanted them, and they loved the ones they had, and they enjoyed parenthood.

These were not babies they had because they couldn’t keep from getting pregnant, or because they needed extra hands around the house, or to really be sure the line of succession did not pass from Feanor’s line--these were babies they had because they wanted them. And that makes what happens to their family all the more tragic.

That’s also why I don’t fuck with some fanon vision of Feanor as an asshole quasi-abusive father who strong-armed his kids into taking the Oath. In The Silmarillion, Tolkien says Feanor’s sons “leapt straightaway to [Feanor’s] side” to take the Oath when Feanor was done. These were the acts of Elves who admired and respected their father, and, lacking direct knowledge about his corruption by Melkor, believed that if Feanor said he was doing something just and righteous, than it was, and they should do it also.

That’s not to say I don’t think there was a contentious element to their relationship--I think with someone like Feanor that’s almost unavoidable--but I do believe the text supports a reading that he genuinely and sincerely loved his children, enjoyed fatherhood, and wanted to be part of a family.

And that makes their family’s story so much sadder.

Cross-posted from tumblr.

I am so ~fascinated~ with Finwean family dynamics so below is just some of my own thoughts on inter-family politics and particularly on how Feanor’s behavior affected the rest of the family’s relationships with each other, especially for Nerdanel.

These thoughts mostly developed in the context of a pair of fics I wrote (one of which is posted) about the post-Oath fallout experienced by the Noldor who remain in Aman, so they are the focus, and these thoughts are all in terms of what I tried to show in those fics.

Although Nerdanel mostly enjoyed Feanor’s family, her relationships with them were difficult, partly because Nerdanel is a brusque and often insensitive person, but mainly because Feanor’s relationships with them were difficult, and she necessarily took his side on a lot of things, and was seen, of course, as being affiliated with him.

Tolkien notes that Anaire (Fingolfin’s wife) and Earwen (Finarfin’s wife) were close friends, and in fact this friendship was part of why Anaire chose to stay behind. Notably, Nerdanel is not a part of this. I think she struggled with these relationships in particular, because of how Feanor treated his half-brothers.

Anaire had one of the better relationships with Nerdanel, because Anaire is a very practical, logical person and recognized that Nerdanel was not Feanor, and that she was, on some level obliged to take his side in family fights because that’s what you do for your partner. However, I don’t know that she necessarily feels Nerdanel is a friend, and Anaire was extremely critical of the way Feanor treated Fingolfin, and of Fingolfin’s ongoing loyalty and affection for Feanor, which pressured whatever positive relationship she had with Nerdanel.

Earwen doesn’t get on much with Nerdanel in part just due to their personalities. Nerdanel, as noted earlier, is blunt and generally practical, while Earwen is a lot more of a dreamy, whimsical, philosophical type. She also talks a lot. So even though Finarfin doesn’t get it as bad from Feanor as Fingolfin (because Finarfin is less a threat in Feanor’s view), Earwen actually has less of a relationship with Nerdanel than Anaire, and when the Kinslaying at Alqualonde happens, she is entirely unable to divorce Nerdanel from the actions of her family, and their relationship craters and never recovers. In a way, Nerdanel ends up taking the blame Earwen might have cast on Finarfin.

Swapping tracks, Indis reeeeally wanted this whole family thing to work. She knew how unusual it was for Finwe to marry her after Miriel’s death and she really wanted it to work with Feanor. She may have tried too hard in the beginning to step into a maternal role with him, which put Feanor off even more. She wanted to consider him one of her own kids, but that was very definitely not what Feanor wanted, and after centuries of trying to get along with him, she sort of had to accept that civility was the best thing she could get from him. She also grew increasingly upset with the way he treated his half-siblings, especially his brothers, and even more so when she saw him imparting his grudges on his sons, so that his children could carry them on. The Oath was the breaking point of her giving up and deciding he’s actually just a selfish, arrogant bastard who is concerned only with how things affect him.

Now, Indis and Nerdanel are another case of personalities don’t mesh (and this was very intentional in my portrayal of Indis’ personality, and was the case for Indis and Feanor as well). But that aside, Indis nonetheless tried to include Nerdanel in the family, in part thinking she could soften Feanor by treating his wife well. However, as with Anaire and Earwen, Nerdanel’s siding with Feanor strained their ties, and Nerdanel was not excellent at hiding her own general impatience with Indis, and after they learned of the Kinslaying, things were messy enough that Nerdanel and Indis both silently decided there was just nothing left there to save.

Findis takes the most after her mother, but unlike Indis, she is not afraid to speak up when she doesn’t like somebody, and she’s thought Feanor was a vain, arrogant blow-hard since she was a teenager. She was bitter about the way he treated Indis, as well as his behavior towards her and her siblings, and she never understood what Nerdanel saw in him. She and Nerdanel also butted heads very openly on quite a lot of things, to the point that they would often take a contrary opinion to each other purely for antagonism’s sake. Findis was therefore very ready to kick Neradnel to the curb after the Kinslaying.

Lalwende is probably the one who got along best with Nerdanel, and not unrelatedly, went with Feanor and stuck it out to Middle-earth. She was an adventurous type, which complemented Nerdanel’s personality, and escaped much of Feanor’s worse tendencies by virtue of how little a threat she presented to him for Finwe’s favor and throne, so she had fewer reasons to dislike Nerdanel by association. She was, I imagine, the one with the closest relationship with Nerdanel.
