This year I read 63 books, which will sound like a lot to some people, and not very much to others, but it's a lot for me at this point in my life. I was a huge reader growing up. Like, regularly getting called to the front of the classroom to fork over the book I'd been reading under my desk during the lesson. But in high school I got into internet and fanfiction and then I was moving around so much that books were never a priority item to haul along with me and I just sort of...stopped reading.

But I've gotten back into it--I've had an active library card again since 2023, which I initially got solely to check out Nona the Ninth XD--and it's been such a joy. I've never been an audiobook person, and I still prefer physical books, but having Libby and audiobooks in my car has made my work commute SO much less unpleasant.

I wanted to reflect on what I've read this year, so I compiled this list of titles and ratings. Asterisks by books I did not finish, generally because I disliked them too much (that's another thing--I've been trying to accept giving up on books I'm really not enjoying more), with the exception of Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger, which wasn't bad, just for too young an audience for me to enjoy. Unrated books I either found too hard to pin a rating to or just didn't get around to rating.

I feel like I got a great spread of books this year, though I've failed to whittle down my TBR list at all thanks to very compelling recommendations. I'm really looking forward to another year of stories!

The actual written reviews can be found on my Dreamwidth or Storygraph.

So years ago when Larian's last big game Divinity Original Sin II came out, I was very taken and bought it shortly after release. This solidified my loathing of turn-based combat and isometric RPGs, despite how much I enjoyed the art, characters, and story. There was one day I loaded it up and it had not saved a battle I'd finished the night before which had taken maybe an hour to get through and I was just done. I sold it back to Gamestop for like $10 the next day.

Having given BG3 a run and decided it was actually great fun and I could just put the combat on easy and work through it that way, I decided  maybe it was worth giving DOS2 another shot, so here we are. I rebought the game and loaded it up and Xbox prompts me to continue my last save from 2019. Yarmeau, my lizard of I-forgot-what-class-and-origin!

But I'm starting from scratch. I'm sure I messed up countless things on that playthrough and I've forgotten most of the plot. I can already see how playing BG3 has made it easier to get used to the DOS2 gameplay!

Still playing as a pink lizard lady though. I will get one of them through the finish line here.

I finally had the chance to try out the Persona franchise last month or so when I picked up Persona 5 from Gamestop. For a number of reasons I will probably never finish it, but one of the things that stood out very sharply to me as a grating factor was the treatment of Ann by the narrative.

The player character is male, as is the mascot, and your first friend/team member, Ryuji. Both boys are in high school, and the first girl recruited to the team is Ann, who joins almost entirely because she's being sexually pursued by one of the teachers, Kamoshida, who the boys are looking to expose as a predator and abuser of students. Ann is furious about how much Kamoshida's gotten away with and more than willing to put herself at risk as one of the Phantom Thieves to stop him from hurting anyone else.

And what outfit does the game put her in as soon as she joins the team? Skin-tight bright red body suit with cat ears and a tail.

Most of her battle poses have her standing with her chest and ass thrust out, often towards the viewer. Her knock-out pose has her face-down on the floor with her ass up in the air.

Both the PC and your companions have multiple chances to make sexual comments at her or about her. One of the mascot's repeat battle dialogues is a breathy line about how she's "so gorgeous!"

This very anime hypocrisy, where sexual harassment is gross if it's one of the bad guys doing it but funny or cute if it's one of the heroes doing it reminds me aggressively of the reasons I've distanced myself from anime since I was a teenager. The game has no real respect for Ann's feelings or the story it created for her. It pays lip service to the trauma of being a teenager pursued by an adult in a position of power when Ann feels like she can't refuse, but it jumps right from exclaiming about how terrible it is for Kamoshida to treat her like a sexual prize into the PC joking about what a sexual prize she is.

If I had any hope that this would be addressed later on--that Ann might call them out for being disrespectful, particularly in light of her trauma--I might feel differently, but I don't. Ann is a romance option for the PC and given how she's been treated so far, I can only imagine how cringe-worthy that path is.

Coming in to gush about the Dragon Age fan calendar some more. This is the first year I've bought a copy and it is honestly SO incredibly professional! The paper and print are quality, the layout looks great, and the art is fantastic! I'm so impressed with the team that put this together; I'm just delighted with it! My wall looks much better now *★,°*:.☆( ̄▽ ̄)/$:*.°★* 。

I am now obsessed with this blog on 1970s sci-fi art...need to stop myself from trying to paint a mural on my bedroom wall and buying an egg chair.

Awfully audacious of Netflix to be sending my movies in a “DVD.com 25th Anniversary!!! :DDD” envelope when they’ve announced their intention to shut down the DVD mailing service in September 😒

This is cross-posted from my tumblr, not because this has been an issue here on DW, but just because I'll feel better having said it. This was the original post:

I've debated bothering to say anything about this because I'm pretty sure the target audience does not follow me but

After going through the tags for lolz on that "Which Tolkien character gets the worst takes" and seeing how many people think "Frodo could be queer" is an appropriate response to that question I really need to say

If you think headcanoning or depicting Tolkien characters as queer or in queer relationships with each other is a "bad take" please evaluate your queerphobia and why you are so uncomfortable with the idea of Tolkien's characters being queer. To be clear, I am not saying "Ship SamFro or you're homophobic" but if the very notion of the ship or the idea of Tolkien's characters being trans or gay or ace or poly is a problem for you, you really should ask yourself why (and no "because that's not canon!" is not a valid answer).

I was honestly, though perhaps foolishly, taken aback by the homophobia that revealed itself in that poll. I shouldn't be surprised by homophobia even in 2023, but I've surrounded myself with such queer-positive content online that I do forget how many Tolkien fans are deeply opposed to the notion of any of his characters being queer.

It's disappointing to me that I even feel this needs to be said, but I will also take this as a moment to thank Tolkien fans who create and support queer Tolkien content. You're great and I appreciate all of you.

Third day of gym activity! I feel good--sore, but not too sore. Will probably skip tomorrow because it's a long day for me wrt classes, but we'll see. It feels very good to be getting back into weights. I used to be so regular about this, but it's been years now.

Tumblr's got me on the nostalgia train so I've restarted Welcome to Night Vale to listen to on the treadmill. It's such a throwback to hear Cecil's greetings XD I haven't listened to this since like 2015!

So far a good start to the semester, I think!

I went down to the used bookstore today to pick up some books for my lit class and they gave me this sticker for free

I was trying to reorganize one of our basement rooms yesterday and I came across one of my dad's old notebooks (he used to keep these big spiral notebooks at his desk and take notes in them throughout the day, usually for housekeeping stuff). I flipped through it just to see his handwriting again, which was pretty distinctive, when I saw a page called "[my name]'s movie list." Most of the movies I hadn't heard of; I can only assume it was a list of movies he wanted to show me or recommend to me. A little wave from the past. It must have been his last notebook; it ends abruptly a few dozen pages later.

So there's a couple dozen more films to add to my "to-watch" list.

Recently The Asexual Agenda brought to my attention this article , where the author makes an argument for why platonic marriages are invalid and generally undermine the institution of marriage, and while the article is over a year old, I felt the need to write a response.

Obviously, asexual people are harmed by the notion that platonic marriage should be forbidden or frowned upon, but I think more generally the obsession with controlling how other people operate their marriages is damaging to all of us.

Response under the cut.

So I finally bothered digging up what feeds are on this website and how they work so I've subscribed to a bunch of those...honestly there weren't as many fandom feeds as I expected, although there are a fair number of AO3 feeds which look like the same kind of automated "it appears in the AO3 tag it appears in this feed" as the AO3-bot tumblr blogs.

If you follow any feeds that you like, let me know so I can check them out!

My sister was in town this week. It was her spring break so she came out to see me since we probably won't see each other this summer, and she probably won't be able to make it to my graduation because of her own school things.

We had such a fun time and I'm very tired but it was great and I was sorry to say goodbye this morning. It makes me wonder where we'll be when we both finish school and settle into jobs and such...I don't like the idea that I might only see her a few times of year at best (;′⌒`) I hope we'll be able to be close enough that regular visits aren't too much trouble, but it'll never be the same as living in the same town.

While she was here we made it through all of Arcane so I've got her on that bandwagon!

I was going through some more boxes of dad’s stuff over break and I found a bunch of his old music cassettes from the 80s and 90s...so naturally I had to go buy a cassette player so I can hear what’s on them...I got it working today and it’s just so wild to hear what my dad was into or thought was worth recording back then...and I can listen to those tapes now and idk there’s just something personal about hearing other people’s playlists/mixtapes I think. It’s nice. And the quality of the music is actually pretty great considering how old they are and that he recorded these songs off the radio!
