So I’m thinking about Finrod and I’m like. I think he was a very humble person and he hung onto that even through being crowned king of Nargothrond but then he started to lose it. But it had become such a part of the way he viewed himself that he didn’t realize until he lost to Sauron that he had, paradoxically, become arrogant and self-assured in his own humbleness and righteousness.
And so I feel like when he was reborn that’s one of those lessons he hangs onto tight, because his arrogance and belief in his own inherent goodness and ability to triumph over Sauron got ten of his most loyal Elves killed, and cost him his own life.
I would love to do a ''Finrod reborn'' fic where he gets to reflect on his past mistakes. He could always be a
little sanctimonious which drove the Feanorians crazy, but boy did he get an awakening when he got tossed in the dungeon. Anyway after rebirth he REFUSES to be addressed as ''Finrod the Wise'' or ''Finrod the Beloved'' or anything of those titles he acquired during his first life. It's just Finrod. Maybe Felagund. But mostly just Finrod (or Findarato).
In light of my last fic I would really love him to return to Middle-earth and talk with Thranduil, because they have a lot of catching up to do and I think Thranduil remained a bit starry-eyed about Finrod ever after that trip, which Finrod is now deeply uncomfortable with and wants to correct. But he's basically expecting it to end in ugliness (and oh God his horror and grief and shame about what his family did to Doriath makes it almost impossible to even speak to Thranduil at first), so when he vomits up all these confessions and Thranduil still wants to be his friend he's just ??? I must have missed something I should have told you. But Thranduil is just so exhausted of loss and war and pain he's not interested in trying to critique Finrod's past behavior; he's just so glad to see an old friend again.
